Running From Fate: The Unstoppable Rise of the "Queen of Trail Running"
In many rural villages, the traditional script for a young girl is already written: grow up, stay local, and marry into a good family. But some spirits are too large to be contained. Driven by a fierce desire to live a different life and inspired by an older sister who refused to be bound by fate, one young athlete chose a completely different road.
From a 20-Square-Meter House to the Sports School
Childhood was spent in a cramped wooden house under 20 square meters where the entire family lived, cooked, and slept together. When a rare opportunity arose at the end of middle school to join a provincial sports team, she took it.
Leaving home was heartbreaking and financially grueling, supported by just 600 yuan a month for living expenses. Isolated at the sports school, deep homesickness and intense physical pain from the unaccustomed training threatened to break her. But the alternative—returning to the village to live the exact same life as her parents—kept her moving forward for four hard years.
Then came a devastating blow: upon graduation, she was rejected by both professional teams and universities. Feeling like an absolute failure, she drifted through dead-end jobs, handing out gym flyers and working in a makeup shop, completely lost.
The "Bounty Hunter" Who Reclaimed Her Fate
The athlete’s fire within her refused to die. Discovering that she could win prize money by running well in China, she stepped onto the trails as a racing "bounty hunter". Her schedule was relentless—often hammering out a 100-kilometer race one week and a 50-kilometer race the next. She won nearly every competition, earning the iconic title: "Queen of Trail Running".
But the extreme strain caught up to her. During the legendary 2019 UTMB, she suffered temporary blindness out on the trail. Terrified that she would never see or run again, and facing a string of devastating DNFs, her confidence shattered. When she stepped away to heal, the crowds vanished, replaced by a lonely silence from people who only ever cared about her results.
Living a Life Undefined
True passion has a way of pulling you back. Returning to the trails with a renewed sense of purpose, she now runs with a relaxed joy, celebrating the very hardships that shaped her resilience. Today, she stands as the master of her own destiny, offering a powerful message to every young runner out there:
"Don't let any labels confine you—whether it’s traditional ideas of when you should marry or what you should do. Take charge of your own fate. Live a life that cannot be defined."
